Hirsutism

What is Hirsutism?

Hirsutism, characterized by excessive coarse hair growth in women, is often associated with various endocrine disorders or hormonal shifts, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), natural androgen production variations, hormone changes during menopause, and certain medications. While areas like the upper lip, chin, abdomen, chest, and back typically have fine, light hair, hirsutism leads to the growth of darker, coarser hair due to elevated androgens in the bloodstream or hair follicles.

Identifying Causes and Treatment:

Potential causes of hirsutism range from natural androgen production variations to hormone changes during menopause, PCOS, and certain medications. Treatment plans are tailored to individual needs and may involve weight loss, oral contraceptives, androgen suppressants, insulin-lowering drugs, or long-term hair removal methods such as electrolysis or laser treatments.
